Abortion Is Not Genocide!

The “Genocide Awareness Project,” a heinous group that equates abortion with genocide, came to my college campus in an attempt to shame the people who have had abortions or know those who have. I write about how absurd and harmful this is here.

Broken TimeTurner: Checklist for Bad Anti-Choice Arguments

Forgive my Tumblr inadequacies, as I wanted to respond to you, but wasn’t sure how (and only just saw your comment). I’m not sure I understand how pointing out the hypocrisy of anti-choicers who don’t care about what happens to Black babies after birth is racist. If I came across that way, I apologize, as I most definitely try to be conscious of racism. However, my point was meant to criticize the blithe approach many anti-choicers adopt in regards to pretending to care about Black people in a manner that very clearly doesn’t care about them. When I say welfare, I don’t mean to invoke the very false image of the “welfare queen,” I say any sort of governmental assistance for those who need it, including but obviously not limited to minorities. It’s not meant to be derogatory to note that certain people need welfare, but rather it’s indicative of a greater problem of poverty in society.

Checklist for Bad Anti-Choice Arguments

A little something I created after reading way, way too many poorly crafted anti-choice arguments.

  1. Mention eugenics – Since when did we define all movements by a singular person? So Margaret Sanger expressed racist sentiments–so did everyone else at the time. Why don’t we use this same logic to attack the entire country, because the Founding Fathers owned slaves?
1a. Pretend to care about minorities – But what about Black babies that are facing a genocide? First of all, wrong use of genocide. Second of all, if you really cared about Black babies, you’d support welfare. Enough said.
1b. Pretend to care about lives in general, except not after they’re born – See 4, but too many people are vocally opposed to abortion because of its ostensible harm, but have nothing to say about sex trafficking and child labor that’s enabled by their precious capitalism.
  2. Attempt to co-opt “Horton Hears a Who,” a la “a person’s a person no matter how small” – Guess what! That’s not what it means! Dr. Seuss’s widow does not approve.
  3. Refer to fetuses as people, except not actually understand what personhood means – Show me an anti-choicer who’s actually read Roe v. Wade and I’ll show you someone who can’t actually understand what s/he reads.
  4. Anti-government control for all people (except women) – This isn’t really something that’s written, but I find a disproportionate amount of “libertarians” who are anti-choice. So you’re all for personal autonomy, except for women? Cool.
  5. Utilize images of late-term abortion to generalize all abortions – This is flawed one, because these are late termed abortions that are rarely, rarely performed (and when they are, it’s usually because the person’s life is in danger) and two, because I guarantee that if I showed you pictures of open heart surgery you would be like, what is this heinous and barbaric procedure! It’s horribly bloody, you should outlaw it! …Oh, it saves someone’s life? Oh…well…abortion is still not okay!
  6. You made your bed, now you have to lie in it – If you have sex, you must have babies! Sex is only allowed for babies! Did we say babies enough yet? Sexual intimacy doesn’t help relationships at all! Sex is evil and babies are your punishment! Sex is just for babies! You don’t want babies, don’t have sex! BABIES BABIES BABIES.
6a. Be fervently against birth control – It’s not really about lowering abortion rates, it’s about sex. If anti-choicers were really against abortion, they’d be handing out birth control in the streets. Instead, abstinence is the only answer, except, obviously, it doesn’t work.

Did anyone hear about the sexual assault charge pending against a 20-year-old female babysitter regarding her 14-year-old charge? Well, after seeing some of the comments on the original story, I was angered at the dismissive attitudes present and submitted an op-ed. You can read it here.
